Their fame spread well beyond Portugal, becoming particularly prized in Great Britain and reportedly enjoyed by Lord Wellington during his time in Portugal. The Elvas Plum earned a bronze medal at the 1855 Paris Exhibition, began exports to America in 1875, and went on to receive more than 200 national and international awards.
