Natural Wines

Natural wines are more a movement than a type of wine. Natural wines have been around for many years now, but has seen more interest recently by producers and by consumers, than ever before  There is not one definition or one idea behind them. In fact that would go against most natural wine producers beliefs, standardizing wine making, constricting their freedom to create.

The one thing and maybe the only rule that all natural wine producers have in common is to only use natural methods in wine making, avoiding any chemicals in the whole process. Commonly they use biodynamic farming as a guideline for farming. Also many use ancient methods, or the use of agronomic practices that were used before the industrialization of our society.

Dirk Niepoort, 5th generation of producers for Niepoort, created a concept in which he invites other producers from everywhere in the world to create natural wines. A concept called Natcool where he lists 8 rules:

1. NO RULES
2. ALWAYS RESPECT THE FIRST RULE
3. LESS IS MORE
4. COOLER = LESS EXTRACTION, LESS MESS
5. AUTHENTIC, COOL ATTITUDE
6. ONE LITER BOTTLE
7. COOL PRICE
8. THE INCREDIBLE LIGHTNESS OF THE BEING

These won’t reflect the ideas of natural wine producers, but it's a fun way to put them.
