West India Boal Old Reserve 10 Years - Madeira

Founded in 1996, Broadbent Madeira was inspired by Bartholomew Broadbent’s father, Michael Broadbent, who famously referred to Madeira as his “desert island wine.” Michael Broadbent played a pivotal role in sourcing the wines and crafting the blends. With over a decade of experience reintroducing Madeira to the U.S. market, Bartholomew Broadbent set out to create a line of Madeiras that could rival the finest in the world.

The soils of this region are primarily composed of basalt, trachytes, trachydolerites, tufa, scoria, and conglomerates, creating an ideal growing environment. The island's subtropical climate, influenced by its geographical position and mountainous landscape, offers mild humidity with variations in temperature and rainfall depending on altitude. Boal grapes are cultivated in Calheta, Estreito da Calheta, Arco da Calheta, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, and Campanário, with manual harvesting taking place in weekly selections from mid-September to early October. After being destemmed, crushed, and pressed, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Fermentation is halted after 4-5 days by adding neutral grape spirit (96°) to preserve the desired sweetness. The wine is then aged in French and American oak casks using the traditional "Canteiro" method before being racked, fined, filtered, and bottled.
