Beira Interior DOC

Beira Interior

It is the most mountainous region of continental Portugal, comprising some of the highest mountains in the country.

The region experiences an extreme continental climate, resulting in significant temperature fluctuations, short and scorching summers, and long and bitterly cold winters. The majority of the soil in the area is granite, with occasional patches of schist and sand.

Beira Interior comprises three sub-regions: Castelo Rodrigo, Pinhel, and Cova da Beira. Despite being separated by mountain ranges, Castelo Rodrigo and Pinhel share similar characteristics. Conversely, Cova da Beira is distinct, spanning from the foothills of Serra da Estrela to the Tejo valley, south of Castelo Branco.

The primary white grape varieties grown in the region are Arinto, Fonte Cal, Malvasia Fina, Rabo de Ovelha, and Síria. The red grape varieties include Bastardo, Marufo, Rufete, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional, with a consistent presence of very old vines.
